Gallagher pulled the reversing lever into the back gear and sent the failing steam whistling into the chilled cylinders with cautious little jerks at the throttle. The box-plow came out of the clutch of its snow vise with shrillings as of a soul in torment, and the bucking out fit screeched coldly down over the snowy rails to the let-up, where the shovelers' box-car had been nu coupled.

This was not a highly enjoyable book even with it being considered a classic in railroading. It did describe the relationship between big business expansion with the focus on building and operating railroads in the West and how the right of ways were obtained and the effects of the land owners and those who used public land to graze their stock. Insight was provided into the forming of associations and back room planning to take control of the Rail Road Commission. Lots of politics and all the good and bad events associated with strong arm political elections. I have no doubt about the accuracy of the book but I did not enjoy reading it because of the conflicts created between neighbors, friends and railroad officials employed as station agents. I did not like the policy that was established of the roadroad tafiff and extra charges which were added to increase proffits. Probably an accurate story but I did not like it.Product details

I'm a big fan of the Francis Lynde stories and have bought many of them. I like the nuts-and-bolts of the engines, cars, and track laying.
Really well written story line with all unexpected and diverse excitement. Western story lovers will enjoy this wonderful ride into the old west .
enjoyed the book slow start but good plot line to follow. I come from a railroad family so that made it more enjoyable.
Was it just me or did others find it difficult to follow sometimes? I give the book higher points for railroad terminology up to a point, however, I believe some of the references to work on the rails (slang, etc.) was made up. If not, then I guess they were talking a lot differently by the time I began working for the railroads back in the 70's.
This was a good book and very factural. The author did his homework for sure. The people building the railroads in that era were very hearty. There were always alot of money involved and book decribes some of it. All in all the book was written to put the reader directy in that time frame.
